FOR THE BEES (online and in print only): The honey bees have been dissappearing and not only is this a problem because honey cannot be synthesized, but it threatens our crops and food supply. Honey Bees create beauty as a result of their diligent work. This exhibition honors the bees who build and create with their diligance and their very bodies.

FIGURE AND CONTEXT: In memory of Sidney Goodman
Sidney Goodman was one of my professors (critics as we called them) at Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts he was a great influence on me and encouraged me to stick with the figure and not get caught up in artificially trying to be "conceptual" which graduate school tends to make people do. He talked about the fact that people always would come out every bunch of years and say "the figure is back" but for him it never went anywhere to begin with. Sidney Goodman stuck it out and kept painting the figure regardless of fashion and trends. In his honor and memory we will create an annual catalog of contemporary figurative painitngs.
"Figure and Context" was the theme of the first call for artists that I ever put out. The work we received was really phenomenal. It is so important to me that the figure not just be flesh and form against a background. Even if it is just marks indicating energy or a color that has been chosen for meaning as well as asthetics, the context of the figure helps tell the story it can be used to talk about the internal world of the subject directly or by contrast, it can be used to convey events or a situation. When done meaningfully the context and figure together can create psychological, spiritual and/or intellectual resonance that makes the difference between a timeless work of art and something that is made for fashion or affect.
Sidney Goodman was my neighbor at the time of that first gallery and he was happy to see that we were showing good stuff. I think this theme will draw art that would make him proud and I fear simple having the them of contemporary figurative art might result in a bunch of dead art. Very excited to see what great new art is out there and to keep the figure going!
